TILES

To avoid a drill sliding across a tile as you attempt to drill it, place a double thickness of tape over the location of the hole you are planning and drill through it. Masking tape is normally best for this.

Mould on the grout between tiles is caused by dampness. Bleach will not remove the mould completely because the mould has roots, so it is best to use a fungicide following any instructions about its use carefully. Any remaining stains can be whitened, then more fungicide applied when dry to help prevent the growth of further mould.

Prior to cleaning bathroom tiles, leaving a shower running for 5-10 minutes or gently pouring a kettle of boiling water over the area will loosen some of the dirt.

A particularly strong cleaner for ceramic tiles is baking soda, white vinegar and ammonia, two cupfuls in total per gallon of water, used with care (and gloves) which can be applied to difficult marks and stains, especially grouted strips, with a toothbrush.

To remove and replace a broken tile, use a hammer and cold chisel working from the center to avoid breaking surrounding tiles. After clearing debris and dust, place the replacement tile so that it does not stand proud while allowing for new adhesive. It is best left for to settle a day before regrouting around its edges.
