If installing hidden lighting, consider painting the surfaces around it white or a light colour, especially the ones above and below it, to reflect more light. This also works well around flourescent tubes in general.
If planning a new kitchen, the "working triangle" concept is a very useful planning aid. Imagine a triangle with three corners. Each of the corners should position the sink, the cooker and the main food storage area, for example a fridge. Each should be an approximately equal distance from the others. A kitchen will be more comfortable in practice by applying this idea.
If installing or replacing kitchen cabinets, leave the doors off until the cabinets are in place then put the doors on last. This makes the job easier to do and avoids damaging the doors. It may be worth marking up which door fits which cabinet before you start.
If you have a row of switches above a worktop that power units underneath it, consider adding nameplates to the switches so that you know which switch leads to which unit.
If there is an uneven wall against which you are trying to fit a worktop, scribing is a good way to identify where the worktop needs cutting or sanding. Put the edge of the worktop to the wall, take a piece of wood and slide it along the top of the worktop while pushing it against the wall, marking the outer edge of the wood with pencil to draw a line on the worktop from which you will be able to see where alterations are needed.
