Insulation
INSULATION
Do not lay loft insulation over the gaps leading to the eaves of the roof. It will block the eaves ventilation, which can lead to problems with condensation both in the loft space and indirectly in your upstairs rooms.
insulation sleeves are best for pipes though hessian lagging can be used if wrapped loosely and to adequate thickness. Cut into sleeves to bend them around a curved pipe then tape them in place.
If insulation of the blanket type will not fit between the joists in your loft or there are some awkward shapes, mineral wool or vermiculite granules can be used. These will move in a draught so it is worth fastening building paper over the joists, but not polythene as it allows condensation to form.
If you have a cold water tank in your loft, do not lay insulation under it as any heat from inside the house will help reduce any risk of your cold water tank freezing.
Always use silicone sealant when the weather is warm and dry. This reduces the risk of trapping moisture in any holes and effectively sealing in any possibility of soemthing rotting from the inside.
