If attaching outside lights to the wall of your house, mount them on the corners of the house, which will light two walls and save cost of lights and electricity.

If putting wooden posts, even in a surround, into the ground, take the time to dip them in wood preservative and let them dry on a polythene sheet. It will significantly reduce the time they will last by reducing the risk of rot.

If you are hammering nails into wood for outside use, try and hammer the nail in at an angle, either upwards or downwards, especially in a fence or gate, as it will have a stronger resistance to wind pressure and movement than one nailed straight into the wood.

Make your own knee rest from an old hot water bottle filled adequately with pieces of foam.

Clean plastic garden furniture with a thick solution of bicarbonate of soda and water, almost in the form of a paste. Leave it on the plastic for a few minutes then wipe it off and it will remove most if not all stains.
